I just registered to take CFA Level 1 in Dec 2004. I am sell-side analyst at a boutique. For someone who has a BS in Finance & Accounting, and does not want to read tomes of Fabozzis, which brief, to-the-point, yet comprehensive study notes would you guys suggest? I know I have limited time until Dec, and I work, hence I am NOT looking for detailed 6-book sets of notes. Something that will quickly walk me through core concepts as examined in Level 1 would be good enough for me.

Thanks a ton.

i have the notes that you are looking for. They are brief, yet very concise notes by Prof. Sharp. I have the December 2003 edition used, selling for $160 i bought these notes for $200 on ebay. They are excellent notes exactly what you are looking for. They are used by a lot of people in nyc and its very difficult to get these notes cheap. even on ebay. Let me know where you are located and if you want to work something out. Or if you want, i also have notes by Shulman review level1 complete with their online classes. For $250.00 brand new notes. let me know if interested in either notes. Where are you located, i'm in nyc.

I have very brief notes for just $30. If interested please email me at [email protected]

Will let you know the name of the prep provider in the email.

Get Schweser's secret sauce and PassPro's CFA condensed. I would consider going to a 4 day seminar. You will get the highlights and explanations of the more difficult concepts at a 4 day review course.

I had read all the Schweser notes before going to the seminar and sometimes I felt like I was getting a glorified book reader. And for other topics, I picked up some valuable pointers. If the review seminar added points to my score, then it was worth attending. Those extra points could mean the difference between pass and fail.

Bean Counter,

What is the difference between Schweser's secret sauce and PassPro's condensed?

I have no idea about Schweser's secret sauce. I have a copy of Pass Pro's condensed though.

We never plan to fail, but only fail to plan !

And one more thing,

Are they enough for Level 1 study, because I don't think they would be enough although one has a good finance background.

We never plan to fail, but only fail to plan !

There are two differences between Schweser Secret Sauce and PassPro Condensed.

1. PassPro Condensed is around 45 pages and hits around 90+% of the LOS's in an outline format.

2. Schweser's Secret Sauce is around 200 pages that explains the high points in narrative. The book says that it tries to cover the top 50% of topics as determined by the Schweser faculty. And sometimes they will say that you need to know something for the test without going into the details on how to do it.

Both are useful and I used both during the last week of studying. I tended to prefer the secret sauce. However, I did look over PassPro condensed for about 30 minutes a day after each session of the Schweser 4 day seminar to get a snap shot of what we had covered in class that day. We didn't get the Secret Sauce until the end of the 4 day seminar.

Also, PassPro's Ethics Condensed does a better job of summarizing ethics than Schweser's Secret Sauce. Ethics Condensed is 20 pages. I read Ethics Condensed the morning of the exam while jogging on the treadmill.

Schweser won't let you sign up for the class unless you've bought the whole study notes package ($299). That is to keep you from buying notes off eBay and then going to their class.

...and another thing. Our instructor was also a glorified book reader, too.

Secret Sauce is a great book for the last 2 weeks of studying IMHO

And what about Essential exam strategies and quick sheet?

Are they any good?

We never plan to fail, but only fail to plan !

The quick sheet looked really useful, but I couldn't justify dumping another $20 into the bottomless pit of this damned exam.

I took the test in June. Waiting for and obsession about the results.

Will be having a firesale (hopefully) once the results come back. I've got Schweser Notes, Pro, Secret Sauce, and note cards.
