Hi. First of all, that sucks. CFA Institute should be a LOT more transparent when it comes to this. Candidates should be entitled to some sort of discovery process where they can at least view the evidences against you (ie, the paper). However, the CFAI is a private institution and can do (almost) whatever they want.
That being said, 5 year probation = no more CFA (you’ll proceed with your career and totally forget about the CFA Charter). So, if you are positive you did nothing wrong, I don’t think you have anything to lose and my opinion is for you go forward and go kick some ass.

You can request the hearing and during the investigation request to have the “independent committee” review the admission ticket itself.

I completely agree with these other guys - a 5-yr suspension means that you would just forget about the CFA charter. A 5-yr suspension is a very harsh penalty and they didn’t impose that for some random pencil stroke. Something substantial is written on your exam ticket.
On a completely different matter I did have an attorney for a PCP investigation. I used an employment attorney who was handling some other issues for me (the PCP inquiry grew out of an intellectual property dispute where I simply disagreed with a former employer and he wanted to be a pain in the butt so he initiated the PCP inquiry). I was glad that I did because they were more responsive to him than to me.
I would absolutely apply for the hearing, but I don’t know if you have to go to Virgina (Charlottesville is a nice place, you can go to Thomas Jefferson’s house, Williamsburg, go to Washington DC). Except for the travel thing, you have nothing to lose. The only thing worse they can do to you is permanent suspension and that’s about the same thing.
Good luck with this.

Thanks bro - this information will help me to start with. Really appreciate you time and effort.

that’s crazy man. i feel for you bro. what could you have possibly written on the admission ticket that can help you pass that test? they worst they should have done is make you do the exam again.

For those who are unfamiliar with sarcasm, please see below.

For those who are familiar with sarcasm, the aforementioned was just that. A certain someone sent me an email which said in so many words, “Good idea, how much?” I don’t want the CFA PCP STD coming my way so I figured I’d need to clarify that I’m completely JOKING about extorting your way to chatahood.

I like the “Let me Google that for you” video. I don’t think you should worry too much about PCP coming after you for a post on the Internet. I have never heard of them going out looking for someone. I think if Madoff was acharterholder, they wouldn’t have started a PCP investigation unless someone explicitly asked them to.

Totally wrong. Don’t you remember? A couple years ago, some people on this forum decided to aggregate exam questions and got totally busted and got suspensions.

I don’t remember - I was probably taking a hiatus from AF then. Need some details…

This has now become part of folklore in the books now:::(case in Ethics book - for Std. VII)
(Sharing Exam Content): Level I candidate Etienne Gagne has been a frequent visitor to an internet forum designed specifically for CFA Program candidates. The week after completing the Level I examination, Gagne and sev- eral others begin a discussion thread on the forum about the most challenging questions and attempt to determine the correct answers.
Comment: Gagne has violated Standard VII(A) by providing and soliciting confidential exam information, which compromises the integrity of the exam process and violates the Candidate Pledge. In trying to determine cor- rect answers to specific questions, the group’s discussion included question- specific details considered to be confidential to the CFA Program. CFA Institute works with candidates and the sponsors of such online discussion boards and forums to remove information of this specific nature from these websites.

I remember those guys and the spreadsheet they were trying to compile of all the test questions they could remember. To be fair I don’t think it was for any particularly nefarious purpose, but the rules are the rules and they got zinged….
btw it was in your AF-hiatus Joey

It looks like they removed the exact wording from CFAI website. But for a time, they specifically named the 2 people and specifically named analystforum.com as the website used to compile the test questions and distribute them.
I believe they got 3 or 5 year suspensions.

how da hell do you get caught posting stuff on the web by the CFA?how do they even know is you and what resources do they have to track you down?
what if Amanda Lang tracks me down for being a stalker?

^ I think they were tracked through their email addresses. Chad says AF didn’t provide CFAI any information on the dudes, so presumably someone from CFAI aksed to be included in the emails (I think they were emailing around a spreadsheet with all the questions) and simply figured it out from there.
