A couple years off and thinking about signing up for L2. Need opinions

I wrote and (barely) passed Level 1 in June 2014. I failed derivatives, fixed income, and quants. Immediately after the exam, I was hired as a Financial Planner at a bank and had to enroll in the CFP program. So I am almost done of the CFP but I haven’t touched CFA materials or even used any of it in my job since writing Level 1. My question is: I want to write Level 2 in June 2017. How much of Level 1 knowledge/material carries over to Level 2? I feel like I forgot everything from Level 1. Do you guys think it’s realistic for me to learn Level 2 independently from Level 1 (ie: basically starting from scratch for Level 2.) If I sign up for Level 2, I plan on starting to study Nov 1 as I have a lot of other commitments and will aim for 1-2 hours of studying on weekdays, 4-5 hours of studying on Saturdays and Sundays, with a couple weeks off throughout the winter for work travel/breaks. My question isn’t “is this possible?” or “can it be done?” because I know it is possible for me to pass, but realistically, do I need a good solid understanding of Level 1 material to have a chance at passing Level 2? Or can Level 2 material be learned independently from the materials provided by CFAI and Schweser?
Thanks in advance for the input.

Start with Level 2 curriculum. You will know when you need to refer back to Level 1 books. If you need to refer back to something in Level 1 study material and you don’t have level 1 books, you can always google it up.

The important parts of Level I will be covered again in Level II. You may want to review the Indirect method of calculating CF when you get to FCFF/FCFE though.

Its been 6 years since I passed Level 1, but have decided to finally give level 2 a go. I’m hoping there is enough detail in the level 2 books that I wouldn’t feel too lost, but with the CFA books, additional material, the internet and this forum, everything will work out!

7 years since I passed L1. Was stuck in a shitty IT role. Now doing MBA and will be graduating next year. Hope to clear L2 in 1 shot.

Not a problem. I wrote and passed L1 in Dec. 2005. Then my commitment fell apart. I was a L2 no-show in 2006, studied barely 50 hours in 2008 and obviously failed, then my career was oriented in such way that benefit/effort from CFA was so low that I quit pursuing. But many years later, my career took another direction where the CFA title was more valuable and I was more mature and disciplined. So I signed up for L2 in 2015…10 years after L1. Never was the time delay from L1 to L2 an impediment. I studied seriously this time and passed.
I say go for it, and I do encourage starating in the fall, unlike those who advocate starting in January and end up serial retakers. Unexpected stuff does come up so you need to give enough buffer. Plus, passing is about your review/practice game so you need to leave plenty of time at the end for that.
