This is a MOTIVATIONAL video for CFA® exam candidates.
What I want to say to all of you female CFA® charterholders or candidates is to keep it up, you might not think that you’re doing a lot by pursuing this designation but you really are. People need to see women out there more in investments, in the quantitative fields. The only way that we will ever gain equality is by people seeing us take these actions. And so I want to give you a pat on the back.

Not sure what gender has to do with anything. In my opinion by singling out a certain group for special treatment like this, you just perpetuate the “them and us” mentality.

So, if I’m interpreting this correctly, you want her to stop encouraging women to enter a field where they are grossly underrepresented because you think it’s going to make women hate men…?
 
I read it as:
holding a particular demographic’s hand will create the association between that demographic and the idea that they require extra help.
 
Encouraging women to take the test is holding their hand? They do the same thing with men in nursing, except women don’t complain about that. I find it hard to believe that all 3 of you are offended by this.
 
Firstly I hope it wouldn’t make anyone “hate” anyone. Also, I’m definitely not offended by it…I’ve got slightly thicker skin than that ;)
What I am saying is that if one wishes for women to be seen as truley equal and just as deserving and able as men (which of course it goes without saying that they are in my opinion), patronising them with cheery gender based “good luck” messages only serves to single them out and maintain the underlying perception that they need to be “saved” from all these big nasty circumstances that they are finding it difficult to deal with….just because they are women.
I’m being slightly tongue in cheek - but you ain’t gonna eradicate gender inequality by treating the genders differently. Seems counter intuitive to me.
 
Take a deep breath and slow down on the accusations. Nobody else in the thread sounds offended and nobody is claiming men and women are not equal.
Its simply a logical falacy to say ‘XXX is equal to everyone else, therefore they need extra encouragement just for being XXX’

When did I say that? What I said was we should probably lay off of somebody trying to encourage a grossly underrepresented demographic from being better represented. If you believe more women in business is not an advantage, then sure. But if you’re like me and you think a greater diversity in behavior and thinking is an asset in business and finance, then all this “if they’re equal then we shouldn’t encourage them” stuff is pointless.
Part of the reason women are so underrepresented in business and finance is because they, in aggregate, don’t like it as much as men. But another reason is because it’s seen as a “boy’s club”, and people are simply more likely to enter professions that they’re expected to, which means society is losing out by having women enter other more “comfortable” positions that they’re less good at.
Let’s face it…men have nothing to complain about. So let’s stop complaining every chance we get. This woman isn’t some bra-burning “lego has no right to make pink blocks” feminist…she’s somebody trying to offer some words of encouragement. Let’s just relax and be happy.

Lego can make all the pink and purple blocks, and lego people with eyelashes that they want to. Just saying.
As long as men stop treating us as outsiders, problem solved. I know there are fewer women than men in this industry, but I haven’t had too many problems… maybe when I worked with frat boys but that’s a problem in it of itself.
I do appreciate girly camaraderie any chance I get though. It was a telling sign when I interviewed at a major non-domestic bank and the bathrooms were for “men” and “wheelchair unisex”. It can be hard to bond with other cands and industry people just because of gender…. it shouldn’t matter performance wise, but of couse you spend 75% of waking hours with them, it’s nice to make friends too. It can be lonely when you’re feeling like an outsider. :(

Fair enough they may be heavily under represented, but that is a different issue - as SpareTime mentioned, it’s partly due to the fact that on aggregate less women actually want to enter the industry.
I’m all for positivity - and I get it….the initial poster probably had the best intentions in mind; I’m just saying that when you are trying to remove unequal treatment by treating others unequally….in opinion that is not the best way to go about it.

I once took the exam next to a hamburger. It was so distracting.
And then I realized, the problem wasn’t with the hamburger. The problem was with me.

You’re disregarding her feelings of being made to feel like an outsider because you’ve never explicitly seen it? That’s part of not being an outsider - you don’t see it or experience it. It’s the same reason so many white men think life for white men is hard…because they’ve never actually experienced being a true outsider, other than a trip to rural India or something.

Yes, white men, as the most privileged demographic in the world, don’t have anything to complain about in terms of systemic discrimination. What a crazy and novel concept!
I am a white man, but unlike you I can recognize the privilege that being a white, straight, christian, able bodied man has afforded me. I have never experienced any sort of demographic discrimination or disadvantage of any sort in my entire life. Just because I can recognize my advantaged demographic position doesn’t mean I hate myself or other white men. I’m just not blind. So if a woman says “I feel like an outsider in this industry” I’m likely to say “Hmm I haven’t experienced that but I can see how you would feel that way” as opposed to “stop whining you racist misandrist!”
