Analyst vs Associate

Can someone please tell me the difference between an Analyst vs Associate? Which position is higher paid? Requires more experience?
 
An analyst's position usually requires a BA or BS whilst an associate's position requires a masters (typically an MBA). Associates are paid higher.
 
In research, its not uniform across all shops.

Associate almost always includes the post MBA people, who do not have their own coverage.

Analyst is the official title of people with their own coverage at my shop.

Then we all have internal positions. For example, I am an associate on my business card, but i am an analyst, in that I am just over a year out of school and a part of the investment banking analyst program.

And senior analysts have the typical internal titles (VP, MD, etc..).

The easiest way to figure it out is if it requires and advanced degree or 3+ years of work.
 
There's the Analyst "title" and the Analyst "function". It helps to distinguish between them. Senior folks may still primarily do analysis, but they sure don't want to be mixed up with the first year crowd hired out of college as analysts.

Also, the order of the titles change from section to section of the industry. In IB, analyst is below associate, whereas in buyside AM, associates usually graduate to become analysts (in terms of titles) and then either become senior researchers or portfolio managers.
 
They're titles and they mean nothing. Most importantly, they have very little to do with job function.
