Waiting for our results to come.... is outta there anyone trading convertibles or emerging ? I'm a fixed income trader for an hedge fund in Switz and i wish i could meet other traders to discuss strategies and... perhaps have business !

I am not a trader, but I am a member of the student fixed income management group with a 1mm portfolio. I'd like to ask which other designations/software packages/skills I get to know to be competitive in the fixed income realm. I am preparing for the CAIA, could it be valuable with the mentioned respect? What level of VBA is necessary? What statistical packages do the FI people use?

Absolutely interested,

Ive got a summer internship in FI trading (I just start tomorrow!) and I look forward to dipping into it as more as possible. My main fear is to be not enough quant for that. How % of you time do you spend programming? ( I hope nil) VBA, C++, SAS...? At least to know that the CFA programme adds in some sense makes me glad!

Thanks,

Hello Luchano
well ... what kinda deisgnation and software ?
It's a stupid answer but i reply... It depends.
I mean to be a plain vanilla bonds trader u need just a bloomberg and an excel file. You rest in front of your minitor for 12 hours a day and update the spreads using the cds.
It's over simplicistic but it's true. U need also a position keeper like condor but i've had a compliance using cheaper systems and that's it.
To become a structured bonds trader u need more complex softwares. That's why u need to know how to use C++. U have to understand each product and divide in in parts. Guess how much does it worth and then test it with montecarlo simulation.
Then i say to AAA... how much time i spend programming ? I can say 50% of my time !
It may happen that i'm involved in fast trading and so i follow the trend but if i buy anything above my fair then... my rule is to sell before the end of the session.
The nice thing is that each trader has his own idea of the forward values of the parameters. That means different fair values but... only a few winners and many losers...

Thanx, Tammy!

Is the official Bloomberg program certification necessary *before* one gets a job?

Does the program certification itself give a good undestanding of terminal?

How long can it take to pass a FI part?

I have found a book ~ Internship at the Wall Street, all about FI, it looks more complicated that the program certification's stuff.

As regards C++, I suppose it could take a lot of time just to know the basics of the language.

Probably, these guys typically have MS in CS background, correct? That is, IT IS NOT what a typical MBA graduate is gonna do, correct?

Well to be honest u don't need any certification. U learn it by doing and you must have a senior to fully understand how a model works.
What i mean is that Investment Firms are not interested in certifications. They don't care at all. And the certification is much easier than the real thing...
I'm not an Mba graduate and i'm studying CFA to improve my skills but neither CFA nor an MBA will teach you how to become a trader...
And that's my opinion (not a fact)...

Hey, Tammy, are you hiring? I'll relocate to die Schwiez!

Ich kann ein bischen Deutsche sprechen :)

Guten Tag C_hayhurst !

I'm a trader not a CFO !
By the way... let's keep in touch, develop trading strategies and make a bunch of money. Then we set up our bank. Is that ok for you ?

hey- my name is shaun - im a fixed inc trader - cover all the mkts- us govt, gse, corps, hi yld, emrgin mkts, etc. - what's on your mind?

Please to meet you Shaun.
My idea ? Trading !
For example... i'm focused in trading european converts and inflations. Sometimes hy. But I wish i could trade someth in USA or in Asia as well.
We can share our views on markets and i think it would be useful to anyone. Or if u prefer we can chat via Bberg...

souns good, but you might find more inefficiencies to trade in europe and asia as opposed to us mkts - how can i find you on bberg?
