What specific job are you looking at? Working within an internal investment team, e.g. equity/fixed income research, or working with a group that selects investment managers?
I went from sell-side big bank to FM of a reasonably sized Pension fund in the UK and took a massive hit on pay. The bonus just doesn't compare. However, the hours were fantastic in comparison.
You'll probably find that pay will especially be lower on public pension plans. Keep in mind that the trend in pension plans is to eliminate internal investment teams and outsource to external managers. It only takes a phone call and a fax to fire an external manager, but getting rid of an internal investment team can get messy.
