I’m looking for raw data about average holding period for stocks through history but I cannot find it.
Any ideas?

(Total shares outstanding divided by volume)*(# days in volume period)
Of course, it depends a bit on how far back you go in history.
Not sure how you would get total shares outstanding for an entire market, but it should be possible to do it with brute force on a company by company basis for the S&P500 if absolutely necessary.

With the algos these days, it’s supposedly 13-18 seconds, or some ridiculously brief period.
I mean, imagine if we still had to trade paper stock certs? The last time I dealt with one of those was back in 1999 back in my stockbroker daze.
Speaking of which, around Columbus and W79th street, there’s this public school, and on weekends they have a flea market outside and inside. In one of the hallways, they have old stock certificates for sale of defunct companies.
