Hi everyone,

I'm an senior undergrad, and on-campus recruiting is starting up with the big investment banks. I'm interested in both trading and traditional investment banking. I'd rather do trading, but if I was offered a banking position (and not a trading position) at certain banks I'd do banking - I'm interested in both positions even though I recognize that they are quite different. Is it a bad idea to interview for both trading and banking positions at the same bank, and express to the interviewers that I would prefer to trade but would accept an offer for either one? I was preselected for interviews for both positions at a few banks, but I'm concerned that they are going to view this as lack of focus or knowledge of what the job entils. Should I just interview for trading, or do banks understand that people may be ambivalent?

Thanks,
Luke

no question about it, do both and if they like you let them sort it out...

No...you need to make it sound like either one would be your top choice. Avoid any disclaimers. If it's at a big bank, typically different folks in HR handle the different divisions. If you give them a disclaimer you might not get either offer. Don't even bring it up unless they ask you why you've applied to multiple divisions in the same firm. If they do, just stress your interest in the position you're interviewing for and mention that you recognize how competitive the recruiting process is, and that you didn't want to miss the opportunity to join their firm even if it meant going to another division.

Are you serious? Nobody should be ambivalent appyling for these jobs. You need to do whatever it takes to get them and show them that they are your top priority. If you say that, they will not understand you and you probably won't make it to the next round.

I would not mention that you would rather trade. I am sure they could get a ton of kids in your school that would rather be in the interview and want that job more then you. In their eyes you should want to work for them and them only. The comment about certain banks should not be taking lightly. Hate to be on the outside looking in come mid summer next year. While certain departments in certain BB have a bit of edge on them, the job is fairly simliar in many aspects across the board. Both people interviewing for both jobs are going to be on their game and to get a second round with either will require you to be the same.
