Is having a CFA needed in any area of IB? I have read mostly about about IB careers/jobs and haven't read much about the CFA within these guides.

CFA is geared more toward investment management careers, yes?

Thanks

The CFA is relatively worthless in Investment Banking (assuming that by IB you mean IB corporate finance). The level of financial knowledge required in IB is pretty low, and the CFA is geared towards portfolio managers.

Thanks.

That is what I figured, but I wanted to make sure.

IB is more than Corporate Finance. Its sales and trading and research as well. Definitely applicable for research. Even some sales guys go and get it to increase competency.

Some young I-Bankers do it to increase exit opportunities.

Technically, I agree with you. However, within the industry, the term Investment Banking usually implies corporate finance. When somebody is referring to sales, trading, or research, it is generally specified as such.

I also agree that it is definitely applicable for research. Even in cases where it's not necessary, the CFA designation is a sort of stamp of approval many analysts need to have. Of course, the same thing could be said for MBAs, which are usually not of much intrinsic value.

How does CFA fir the bill if one wants to be a market researcher/analyst?

N8,
Pretty well. Our chief economist is a charterholder. I also know the local branch of the Federal Reserve employs charterholders.
