Best Pen: Uni-Ball Signo Mitsubishi . Works like a charrm. Smooth, clear, reliable and ergonomic . The rubber piece is so convenient. Made in Japan.
Best Pencil, eraser, and Sharpener : hands down Steadtler. It’s surprising to chose anything else. Made in Germany
Best Calculator: here it gets a bit emotional,Texas Istruments BAII Plus Professional. This beast survived thousands of calculations over 2 years for CFA and work; and is still running on the same original dime sized battery. Talk about power efficiency. It is arguably the instrument of the highest calculation-power-to-energy-consumption ratio in the world. One drawback, keys are not as smooth as the older Plus version. They are a bit noisy and sometimes miss inputs. I love this beast though. Made in China on behalf of the proud people of Texas (busy producing country songs and fracking).
Japan, Germany, China, and the U.S. allied to help in D-Day.
France offered beautiful high quality fashionable white flags. Hopefully I won’t need them.
Canada offered Celine Dion and maple syrup for any post results miserable moments.

1. Do yourself a favour and splurge on a decent pen. Fiance bought me one from x-pen a little while ago. Regular pens just aren’t the same.
2. The BA II Plus Professional is a waste of extra money; the cheaper one does just fine. Never had an issue with loud buttons or inputs not being read.

Strongly disagree. Faber Castel is THE best German pencil manufacturer. Städler is crap

This was for the exam ( we’re in Analyst Forum not howtospendit.ft.com). For my everyday use, Cartier fountain pens are the best. I precious the most their Pasha series especially after they stopped producing them. I dont like Montblanc pens. Montblanc is like Mercedes and Louis Vuitton ; they’re normally the first purchases of wannabe’s and the nouveau riche.

Funny, as a German in Germany I used an American DixonTiconderoga (produced in Mexico nowadays)…

TI BAII calculators are for high school kids and college undergrads. Get to know the 12C. That’s what all the real deal finance guys use in the real world. Might as well go ahead and get used to it.
BAII = getting laughed at in a meeting

Showing your age ;)
I use both hands to key in numbers and functions. The design of the BAII helps in this alot. I could execute calculations very fast. Beside this, I changed its setting to Algebraic mode. Am faster with the Algebraic mode than 12C’s RPN.

It’s funny to me watching kids holding a BA with both hands punching numbers with their thumbs like it’s a cell phone. Well, at least it doesn’t make as much noise as some fat-fingered people punching numbers like a woodpecker with their index finger of the same hand they write with. Real finance men use a 12-C, calc with their left hand using the first three fingers like a num pad, write with their right hand, and never look up.

I personally feel Texas instrument does a better job! Especially the earlier version, brown color, it is simple and yet the keypad is so smooth and easy to type!
i bought a spare Texas this year professional version damn the keypad is so difficult in terms of punching the numbers good I had the old one with me that saved at least 5-7 minutes .
pencil wise use straddler brand it was relatively fine and did the job
pen wise I straggled to find one but eventually found Lexi 5 it says on the label.
