I'm not at Blackrock but have heard a few things about their fixed income area, might not apply elsewhere. In FI they are firmly inveseted in the "career analyst" model. Analysts pretty much stick to one sector for their entire career, and they are never promoted to PM. The PMs are primarily former traders from the street. And, I think they don't have stand-alone traders, the PMs trade for themselves. Like I said this is in fixed income.
