Can I take level 1 exam without bachelors?

oh thanks for the link, did not expect the deadline to be that early. That changes things a bit for me, I think I may still try for the exam1 in Dec since I wont be in school, while applying for jobs. If anything passing exam 1 could help me for a job if I cant find one by then. I guess I’ll have a bit more time to prepare to exam 2 (or retake exam 1 lol). I was 1 class short for my finance degree. The course I needed to take wasn’t available for another year. I went to the dean and explained my situation along with one of my professors. They decided to allow me to write a 40 page paper on a current topic in finance with their approval. I spent half the summer playing golf and tennis and writing that paper. It was a pretty easy way to close out that chapter in my life.
Always worth a shot. Sometimes they will bend the rules to help you graduate.

Hello everyone! I’m new to the board as well and am in a similar (yet different) situation. I just finished the 3rd year of my undergraduate business program and am enjoying my summer before I begin 4th year in September. I would like to register now for the december exam so that I can study over the summer but do I qualify? I understand that I have to be in year 4 at the time of my registration but does the summer going into 4th year qualify?

Hi Redox, I am now sure how your school works but for mine, after I finished spring semester (April) for my third year, my status was moved to 4th year. So I had a 4th year status at the start of summer as opposed to the beginning of the fall semester. Not sure if that helps but maybe you can check your status to see if it updates. Also, even if you are not eligible to officially register, I am sure you can get hold of the curriculum and start learning it during summer. Hope that helps and good luck.
 
hey 918 we share the exact same story from taking L1 while still in school to the grades not being so great throughout anyway haha.
i highly suggest taking the exam asap as it shows employers you actually want to pursue this career and won’t leave to be a missionary in a couple of months. if your grades aren’t amazing, your exam progress is what’ll land you a job. i can’t speak for this current market nor the one 1-2 years from now, but it definitely helps in being considered. i took 3 courses while studying for the level 1 exam so i’m sure one course wouldn’t get in the way at all. i know guys who studied for it taking a full class load and still got a’s across the board. the bottom line is finishing school in that year, if you don’t they’ll take the pass away from you, but planning ahead as far as you are, i’m sure you’re not the type to need another year of school.
and like others has said, its great to find AF from the beginning, i just wish i was more active on it before and not just a lurker or whatever we’ve labelled them as…

Hey Matt, thanks for the post. Ya its very scary because of the current situation for someone young like me to be pursuing a career in this industry. I just hope the finance industry rebounds and in the future it is a choice I wont regret taking. Finance and #’s has always been my passion growing up, I could never see myself in science and never showed interest to bio/med material.
Im alittle confused as to what you mean they will take the pass away from me, so for example I take the Dec 09 exam and pass it, I have to have obtain my bachelors by Dec 2010 or else the exam 1 results will be forfeited?…I plan on graduating May 2010

to clarify my situation. Took cfa level 1 in December 2007 while in last year of undergrad. Passed. :) and went back to register for level 2 but couldn’t find the link.
I called CFAI to find out what’s wrong and they clarified that you MUST have an undergrad before registering for level 2.
this was their reply:
“Thank you for contacting us about your enrollment. You’re unable to register for Level II because we haven’t received verification of your degree. Please provide the following information by e-mail to [email protected]:
* Name of college or university;
* Type of degree you earned (e.g. Bachelor’s, Master’s);
* Month and year degree was earned.
Once we receive this information, you’ll be able to register for Level II within the next three to five business days.
given an undergrad degree is required to register for level 2. ”
…
in any case i have a friend that was able to register nevertheless while in undergrad for level 2 (and he passed) by providing CFAI with his official transcript and letter of recommendation from the dean.
so anything is possible.
that said, i was able to register after a lengthy correspondence (no dean letter).

oh awesome! So its possible for CFA to allow you to write exam 2 without an undergad if you have a valid reason? Do you think if I send a letter to cfa about my situation, they will let me register for exam2 since I will have obtained it before I actually write it?
