I need some career advice. I'm interested in going into risk management (credit risk). I'm currently working at a bulge bracket IB in a control role doing P&L. I'm thinking about staying for a year or two to gain some experience. Will it be possible to switch over to risk management after being in a control function? Also, is working in a control function considered solid entry leve experience or should I consider switching jobs to reach my goal to risk? I don't want to get pigeon-holed where I am at right now. I am a level ii candidate. Any input would be appreciated. thanks

i'm not entirely clear what job or group you're trying to get in, but from your vague description of it, doing p&l isnt applicable experience. i'll be honest...reading your post is a little scary. you should have a much better handle on your career outlook, there are some really basic things you seem to be unaware of.

have you explored if the option of moving over is available? i'd be surprised if your firm let move out of the back office and into credit risk analysis, it's pretty rare for the large firms without a connection. the experience you get doing p&l is not going to help much in getting any sort of job outside of operations. and now the really bad news (yes, it gets worse): you've probably already been pigeon-holed by virtue of being in a back office. not saying it's not possible to move out...sorry for the grim picture.

Well, I'm not at an IB but I was able to move from ops to a credit analyst position in risk management at my bank. I don't really have any tips, my experience in ops wasn't really relevant at all, but I understood how the bank functioned and the risk group liked that. Other than that, I had passed Level II and was able to hold my own when they asked me about financial statements, credit analysis, etc. So it may be possible, but like I said I'm not on the street and my bank is relatively small.

Yes i think it will be....i moved into credit risk with prior experience....but i would like to move into investments
