Okay so heres the story. I enthusiastically signed up and puchased the course material for level 1 in July for the dec. 2006; thinking that I would begin my quest towards a CFA designation. Too make a long story short; I switch roles within company and created a new learning curve for myself. Currently, I have lost the passion and desire to stufy for the exam for now. Im sure in the future I will give it a serious shot. But for now what do I do? Can you cancel you test date or postpone it? Can I still properly study beginning today and expect to pass? Any help with be appreciated.

If you have a solid accounting background, you can easily do it in the remaining time. If not, it might be tight. Check the CFAI site about rescheduling - I think you lose the fee you paid (but not the one time portion of registration), and if you bought material some of it will be out of date for June next year.

I really think that you have to have the desire, as you are going to have to put the time in to complete the material from now until the exam. It is better to do it well in June than half hearted now!

But it is still posiible depending if you can put in the committment.

I think this "keeping in motivation" problem is same for most of the cabdidates..
Its hard for us to allocate necassary time and when we have spare time use it always for studying... I also beagn to study hard but as time passed i started to feel as loosing my determination and motivation..
I know that u cant postpone your exam date.. it means u loose the application fee.. :(

buck up little trooper...study as much as you can and take it in Dec...even if you fail, you will gain invaluable experience from the test day. Also, most likely your materials will be fine for preparing for the June 2007 test.

the greatest motivation is working at a job that you dont want.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'm going to put off the CFA for now. It's an impossible challenge especially if your not motivated.

may as well write the december exam...get a feel for it.

the fees are a sunk cost anyway.

You said it. I couldn't agree more.

I know where you're coming from, because I have a similar motivation, however I ask myself if I'm doing this because I want to, or because I don't want to do what I'm doing right now. I can't say with all certainty that I want to be in the finance industry, but I am almost certain that the material in the CFA will be helpful and useful to me regardless of what field I plan to be in. I'm thinking of it as a stepping stone to a job where I can get better experience and then a top MBA program.

Just to add:
Success is measured by what you had to give up inorder to achive it !!!!!

I just received my letter in the mail from CFA Institute saying, "Congratulations. You're a CFA Charterholder," and it feels great. It was a lot of work and there were many evenings and weekends when I felt pretty burned out, but always kept an eye on the prize and never lost motivation.

For those of you not sure, it's pretty sweet to finish, knowing that the whole thing is self-study and relies on your own discipline is a confidence booster.

Are you confusing opportunity cost with success? If not, then that's one strange way of looking at how successful you are.
