I have signed up for CFA Level One exam in December. I have bought the 4 big books from the CFA Institute. However, I don't think I am going to have time to study enough because I will be very busy finishing up my last semester for my MBA in December. I ended up not being able to get the class I needed over the summer, so I have to take it in the fall. Thus, my work and study load will be too high. Thus, I have resolved to take it next June.

My question is: Would it be a really bad idea to keep these 2006 books to use them for the June 2007 exam? I can't imagine the books change that much from year to year. I was considering selling these book (at a discount) online for anybody planning on taking it in Dec. '06, and then buying the new 2007 books once they are available.

If anybody has experience using the previous year's version of books for taking a test, can you tell me if it was a good or bad idea?

I doubt it will change much.

What you could do is buy a set of 2007 study notes from one of the prep providers. This will help you cover anything that is changed for '07 and it will be a good review for everything else.

I think that CFA materials will be different for 2007. How much they are different? I don't know, but I think that CFA Institute publishes something like "amendments to CFA materials" every year. I couldn't find at CFA Institute web site, but I remember that they were there, nd also one of the forum participants was sending them out

Since I will most likely be withdrawing from the CFA Level 1 exam in December and sitting for the June 2007 exam instead, I have to forfeit my "enrollment fee" (but my "registration fee" can be carried forward for the June 2007 exam). So basically, I will have to pay the CFAI another enrollment fee. Does anybody have any idea how much money this is?

I sent them an email asking them about it, and they simply reiterated what I already knew, as if they didn't really understand the question. I expected a bit more info from them. Seems simple enough, no?

If you go to the CFAI website and select "register by mail" it lets you download a .pdf application.

Somewhere on there (page 3?) it says what the application and enrollment fees are. I believe the enrollment fee is what changes (gets higher) the closer to the actual exam date you register.

my books are 5 years old, which was fine. i almost soley used schweser anyway

This year, the CFAI provided a supplement for those who purchased the old books from previous years. If the material changes in '07, they will probably to the same.
(This year's supplement was the new ethics material and the selected material not in the texts from previous years, mostly FSA.)

Sell it on eBay now. Claim tax deduction (at least if you are in Australia). And purchase new ones next year. You won't lose much.

Thanks, mkgref. Originally I did not know where to look, so I logged in and tried to find my account information. Then I looked at the PDF as you suggested and saw what it was. I was thinking it would be a more trivial amount, but it looks like I'm going to have to cough up another $360!

The *readings* don't change to much from year to year unless they move to a newer edition. Given that '06 is the first series of these books, they will not want to replace them this year without cause.

The LOS will definitely change. Each year the CFA puts out a book of readings that are specific to the level and year. This is where you will find any new readings. The books you have should not need to be replaced.

I'd still recommend a Schweser in addition to the CFA books. Schweser's reading's are matched up with the LOS so it's easier to stay on point.

sidestroker, I could buy the 2006 level I books from you (at a discounted price), if you want..

I have the 2006 Level 1 books and never even oppened them, decided not to take the course.

If you want to purchase them at a discount let me know
