CFA membership

i just received the confirmation that my regular membership has been approved. Would anyone be able to answer my question below?
Do i need to activate both my CFA institute and local CFA society membership in order to become a charterholder, or would just the CFA institute membership suffice?
Activating both is ~$440 which is quite high to be honest but activating the institute only would drop that to $275

You have to apply to and be accepted by a local to be awarded the charter. You can drop the local in the future if you so desire.
