I've taken the CFA Level I & II exams with the hope of breaking into equity research, but recently took a job in the private equity arena. Anyone have any insight as to how the CFA charter is perceived in that world, and if it would even be worthwhile to try to finish Level III on top of what will soon be a very demanding schedule?

I've invested a lot of time/money in the CFA but want to be forward looking and realize it is a sunk cost :)

Thanks.

I really dont thinkits imp to hv ur CFA when working in the PE industry and specially L3 coz thats mainly PM.

You are done the first two...
Why wouldn't you finish?

Don't be such a @#$%&.

God Bless the Internet. Only in this day and age can a guy who ALREADY works in PE get advice from a guy like this.

Has anyone ever actually looked at a job posting for PE. I read one the other day that had the following qualification prerequisites,

- undergraduate degree in finance / accounting or an MBA with a specialization in finance
- CPA / CA / CFA

And if you really think hard about it, you can figure out that even in PE, PM practice asset allocation.

cfa is probably more common at middle and lower middle market funds as well as fund of funds.

if you're good enough to get into a megafund you don't need the CFA and you won't have time to study for it
