At the moment I live in uk ,but since I am originally Iranian and have to go back in 2,3 years time ,I was wondering what happens if I pass all the levels since Iran is under sanctions ,the CFA institute has put a sanction on Iran ,since I am not a resident to any other counry except Iran ,I was wondering what should I do ,if I take the exam in Dubai for example wouldI be counted as a charterholder there ? I mean is the nationality important in this matter or the place you have taken your exam and paying the annual fees to ?
Because if the nationality is important basically I cant go on with my CFA ,….

The US prohibits all the US companies from any business with iran, but answering why there is a sanction ? I think its a political matter and each person has their own views my friend

That’s unfortunate. Sanctions only hurt the innocent people of countries.

The network I have is in Iran,Iranians are employed very difficult in UK based companies and to obtain a work permit for an Iranian is very difficult. I either have to go for a Masters or Phd to stay there, which is very much financially demanding.
Also I have emailed the CFA I a while ago and they did not give any clear answers. One of the reasons I prefer MSc Finance over the CFA is I dont know if obtain my charter after say 4 years The CFA I will sanction it just becuase I live in Iran, but the MSc will not expire .
It means alot to be part of an large organization like this, thanks everyone

My advice: keep taking CFA exams!
You are still studying, I assume, so given that you are “only” a L1 Candidate means that you have at least 7 ahead of you before you would be awarded the charter if you don’t have any prior work experience. Many things can change in 7 years. From how good things went lately with Iran getting a new leadership and being more open to discussion I don’t believe those sanctions (if they apply to you at all) are written in stone forever. My guess is that over the course of the next 10 years or so Iran will move closer to the west and reestablish its once very good relationships. From what I understand the Iranians would support such actions and from what I have heard most people there are very open to Western ideals.
So if you would be technically awarded the charter in 7 years and the sanctions would have eased by then, you would be amongst the first Iranian charterholders.
If sanctions are still standing by then, you still would have taken all exams and completed the relevant work experience. The only thing left to do would be to vote for a more favorable leader and wait for sanctiosn to fall, in which case upper argument applies. CFAI might withhold you your charter but they probably wont void your exam results. It’s in their best interest to have charterholders ready when Iran awakes from its geopolitical delirium.

Sanctions will be lifted one day. Its just the nature of US foreign policy. Obama is already buddying up with Iran and Syria to fight off ISIS. Just a matter of time before Iran is the friend of the hour and some other nation no one in North America can differentiate is the enemy.

Good luck mate, I just hope whatever decisions you make works out for you..

I actually deal with Office of Foreign Assets Control (aka OFAC) sanctions regularly as part of my job. While there are general prohibitions on business activities with Iran, Syria, Sudan, Cuba and North Korea, there are “licenses” that individuals may apply for.
You are in luck, however, because as of about 4 months ago, OFAC issued a license to US academic insitutions to set up exchanges with Iran (called Iran General License G). Under the agreement, companies like CFAI are eligible.
So just like that, you can now register with CFAI under the blanket license (Sudan qualifies under a separate license too). You don’t even need to apply for a personal license. Sorry to any Syrians, North Koreans, or Cubans lurking about though–you’re screwed unfortunately.
