Friends, I am a CFA level 1 candidate and doing my masters in finance from an Indian University. I wish to seek guidance on how to add more value to my profile? I always wanted to go for equity research. What additional certification can increase the chances of my employability?

PS: My masters is a part time kind of a course. I am not in a b school technically. The value of my masters degree isnt credible enough to get a job by itself.

You probably shouldn’t do it then if you already know it’s not good? Your school should help provide a network. I am not in school right now, but will look for that when I return.

Though not credible, that course still gives me a post graduate degree, its better to have something than have nothing….

Don’t tell Itera that! I’m not saying don’t do it, but is the cost worth it if you don’t get anything from it? If it’s not credible why would someone care if you have it?

I agree with lxwarr…it seems the cost of the what you say is not a good degree will not render you any benefits. As of now your profile is at a disadvantage…being a CFA level 1 candidate means absolutely nothing (anyone can sign up for an exam) and an MS from a no good university doesnt help. Your best bet is to transfer to a better university, hopefully that is a possibility for you. What was your undergrad in?

In my opinion, for a professional designation to be worth your time and money, you should not have to look up what the letters means. Everyone knows what CFA stands for in the finance/accounting industry. That said, a lot of finance designation are out there but truth is no one gives a darn.
Choose wisely.

That’s probably not true. At least from my perspective.

My masters degree makes me eligible for a couple of jobs with government of India. Secondly it is recognized by the government. The only issue is a typical equity research guy in India doesnt come from that university with that degree. the focus is on additional course not about my masters in finance. Phd in astrophysics is a great advice. i really appreciate it.

Maybe it’s india where you need to have 5 degrees, 3 masters, 2 phds, and 7 professional designations to get a job?

All done in a year too?
I’ve run into some of those characters here… let me say that number of qualifications seems inversely proportional to knowledge/usefulness!

moving out of india with a cfa designation would be a good proposition. :P

The truth is, if india doesnt push growth now, it will be our turn to watch the weekly jobless claims every minute,

Probably the Claritas certificate.

seriously though, I wouldn’t get a graduate degree for the sake of having one. A MS from a crappy school is NOT better than without it

I guess this is why AF is an informative place because i would never have guessed India is in such a bad place, we only hear about the US and parts of Europe, but only recently i learn how bad the market is for India as well.

I agree and disagree with this.
I agree with the “don’t get a grad degree for the sake of having one”. I know a lot of MBA’s from Local State University that have trouble getting jobs as a shift leader at Taco Bell.
However, any degree is better than no degree. Whether it’s a net benefit (considering time lost, tuition paid, etc.) is still up in the air.
