Can someone give me some advice on how to draft it? I am currently applying for an investment banking training program within the same bank that I work for, I'm currently an account manager for personal banking, but my degree is in finance. What are the key points that I should include on my cover letter?

Hi:

It would help if you can provide the area that you wish to apply (i.e. Trading, Research, Finance, etc).

Good luck

I'm mainly looking at research, I am a CFA level II candidate awaiting results

Try this.

I am applying for the U job at W bank. I think that W is the best bank in the world because of this that and the other thing. I think that I would be the best at U job because I have X Y and Z attributes and such and such qualifications.

I want to get into IB of for the following reasons (Insert high quality grade A BU** S**T, but what ever you do don't say for the money, this will only highlight your inability to blatantly lie, which will make you an undesirable candidate).

Good Luck

Your form should be 1-2-3 paragraphs. Para 1 is an introduction, who you are "I am a recent grad of xx school with a major in finance. I am interested in investment banking for xx ..."
Para 2 is what you bring to the table (coursework, personal traits, motivational story for wanting to be in finance).

Para 3 is the closer, why this bank (although if you are good you would know key words and have these sprinkled throughout), etc.

As always, read and re-read.

Good luck.

research =/= banking

am confused here

Sak's approach is the one I use. The old 'three paragraph' structure is the classic.

Numi, from the retail side (which is where the poster is coming from) everything under the investment bank umbrella is investment banking, with precisions to corporate finance, capital markets, etc.

If he's trying to get into the analyst class then I would expect him to know what he wants to do but be slightly lacking on the terminology.

I love holidays, hate the hours before them. too crazy around here.

Thank you all for this great information, and should I mention that I am aware of the fact that the investment banking analyst program is different from my current position in terms of permanent/temporary, because the program can get rid of people after two years, while right now I have a formal job. The program is mainly aimed at undergraduates who are graduating next year, so I'm worried that the fact I'm working may make them think that I may not be willing to forfeit what I have
