This layoff will come from M&A.

How do you guys deal with this kind of layoff personally?

How to decide to stay and when to decide to move?

I dont know anything about the Swiss RE layoff in particular, but the rule of thumb in places I've worked has always been that if you think you are going to be laid off sooner-or-later then its often better to be in the first tranch as they often get the best package, do not have to put up with months of uncertainty, a depressing work environment, can be out looking for a new job first, etc etc.

At the very least, for an ambitious CFA-type it doesn't suggest that the prospects for promotion, bonus, etc will be too good for a number of years...

I would even say that if you think that you are going to be made redundant get out there and find a new job before getting the boot, not only much better for the ego but as well better for salary negotiations for your next job which is more important than the package as it lays the basis for the following years

You are right. Most of those people will leave before the targetted layoff date. I agree that it is far better to find a job before that. Swiss Re is a decent company in this sense, it will not lay off people suddenly like most of those technological firms did before. It gives employee some kind of buffer to take.
