thanks dante, I don't feel so dang bad about my low salary now lol! Are you still looking into going to Russia?

How is the finance job market on the west cost btw?

cheers

Buy side is huge on the West Coast. My guess is that LA is second in the US for institutional asset management.. between NY and Boston. I'm not sure where SF fits into the mix, but I'm not aware of any major shops based in SF other than BGI and Dodge and Cox (which are both mainly retail i think). The job market is good, but it's always tough to get into the top institutional shops. Much easier to go the retail route. It's not so great for sell side stuff but it does exist.

how big is the sell side in SF? my boss told me the other day that there are between 300-500 sell side analysts (not necessarily coverage analysts) in SF, which i had a hard time believing, but admittedly i don't really know.

I always thought of SF as a bigger financial center than LA...interesting. Where is CALPers and the other Cal pensions located, Sacramento I assume?

The statewide pensions are in Sacramento. There are also tons of smaller pensions (100s of millions instead of 100s of billions) sprinkled all over the state. Usually these mid tier ones are for county employees etc...

SF is probably a bigger financial center overall, but not for institutional asset management.

Most of the institutional money is concentrated in a few large shops, a few of of which happen to be in LA...

danteshek & kevin0118,

what would your firms pay research assocs w/ a few years of SS experience?

There are no research associates in my firm.

In portfolio management there are 3 main titles:

Portfolio Analyst (portfolio operations work, no investment decision making)

Research Analyst

Portfolio Manager

I have no idea what Research Analysts and PMs are paid, but it probably ranges from 150k to several million a year.

PAs are probably pulling in between 50 and 75 before bonus.

Hi,

I have a general questions about jobs in Toronto. I'm a Level 2 candidate awaiting my results and looking to change my career from engineering to equity/fixed income analysis. I did Bachelors in electrical engineering from Waterloo and have been working in Silicon Valley for the last 6 years, so I'm not familiar with Canadian financial institutions beside the big banks.

Can someone who are the big employers in Toronto? Also, are there headhunting firms?

My lifestyle in LA on a 45k base salary is much better than entry level people in NY making 65k base. I rent a nice 1 bedroom in a good neighborhood for $1150, and I walk to work. And I only work ~45 hours a week, so there plenty of time to chase girls and hang out at the beach. I could do this for a long time.
