I was reading another thread some one saying that they were memorizing and mugging up teh ethics and sopc.
Do we need to remember those ? i mean are we expected to be able to identify which particular standard applies in which particular case? or just if in a given case any violation has ocurred or not?

i mean are all the ethics questions like those on the sample paper ?
or will they expect us to identify the specific name and number of the code ?

Thanks

not really...but I remember that there were some questions asking which standards were violated, based on some specific case...and among the answers were standards (or violations) which are not mentioned in CFA Ethics...so you kinda have to know the ethics and standards very well. Another thing is that ethics can be very tricky: sometimes it is difficult to draw the line between what's allowed and what's not allowed. In GIPS and Corporate Governance sections there are a lot of details, which are tested as well, and which we have to know quite well

They won't trick you on matching a standard with a number but you do have to know it well. Don't worry about memorizing the numbers or order or any crap like that. Just know it thoroughly. They are quite tough, but fair.

hi guys!

I did not mean to make Ethics sound like it has to be mugged! I only meant that if you remember the heads, it becomes easier to solve the problems. So mugging is optional. Not necessary.

I realise this when I read through the ethics part. I understood it and quite frankly I thought i remembered it. But when I read it again there were a few heads that I did not recollect reading. For e.g. responsibility of supervisors comes under the head of Duties to Employers - therefore if one has not performed the supervisory role correctly, then its a violation against the employer and not the client. (Please correct me on this) another, performance presentation under DUTIES to clients and prospective clients, referral fees under Conflicts...so on....

Therefore, one can expect the sub-head to be tested with respect to the main head. Or vice-versa. I dont intend to make it sound tough, but it just becomes EASIER. It does not take more then 20 mins to get the order right!

regards,
Salil
