When I took the Schweser1 AM exam, I hadn’t realized you were meant to use scratch paper. I tried cramming all the IPS responses into the little areas provided (yeah, stupid of me, I know). I’m just trying to understand exactly the format of the exam. You get a test booklet (like Schweser), and then you get a seperate booklet that you can use for answers? Is that right? Or is it the same booklet but blank pages are at the back of the booklet? For the answer that are in box response format, can you recreate the boxes on the scratch paper, or do you need to answer the box questions in the boxes, and then the other more open ended answers you have the choice of answering these in the booklet. For any answers marked in the scrath paper section (is there a name for this btw?) , do you need to indicate in the original answer area (where the question is stated), that you are answering in the scratch paper area? And the answers can be in any order, is that right? Is there a post somewhere or a video showing the format?

Also, very interested in this question. I remember lots of posts here of people complaining about writing the answer at the wrong place in the exam. When looking at the old actual exams on the CFAI page, what can i do wrong? Are there any tricks?

I think that it’s all in 1 booklet now, check out the 2013 am paper.
They lay out the full question, so question 1a-d. Then if its a box answer, the next page is a template with ‘answer question 1a in this template’ or if its just an answer for paper, they give you a blank bit of paper with ‘answer question 1b on this sheet’ at the top.
There are blank bits of paper with ‘do not write answers on this page’ written in the middle.
Any candidates from last year able to confirm how it was structured on exam day?

Thanks so far. That’s how it appears to me on the old mock given on the CFAI page. Really not that complicated, right?

yes cfai got better, they clearly tell you which answers need a template and which dont use a template

Same booklet. Has template answer pages after the question page. IIRC also has scratch pages (at the end?) and you can probably use question pages as scratch - if you mark them as such.
