Hi Guys,
Example 17 for Solving for Interest Rates and Growth Rates
I put in the values of
PV = 10,503
FV = 14,146.4
n = 4
then hit i and I get Error 5 which according to the manual means:
n = 0
n>=10^10 or n< 0
i =< -100
but none of these is the case for this question, not sure how to use the calculator to solve this problem.
I get the same error when I try to do example 19:
PV = $10M
FV = $20M
i = 7%
Then hit n on the calc… get Error 5.

The PV, FV, PMT, n, and i buttons on your calculator are for cash flow problems, which means that the sign on the values you give for PV, FV, and PMT matter.
You can take one of two points of view:
  • The investor
  • The account
I suggest that you pick one – right now – and stick with it forever.
Suppose that you take the investor’s viewpoint on the first question. Then:
  • PV = −10,503, a negative value because that is a cash outflow from the investor into the account
  • FV = 14,146.4, a positive value because that is a cash inflow to the investor from the account
Suppose that you take the account’s viewpoint on the second question. Then:
  • PV = $10,000,000, a positive value because that is a cash inflow into the account from the investor
  • FV = −20,000,000, a negative value because that is a cash outflow from the account to the investor
