Does anyone know anything about this? How is it viewed in the industry as a way to transition to an analyst type role. Trying to decide whether to apply or not.
 
Mostly. Just FactSet consulting alone doesn’t say much. They have different people do different things.

My roommate has this job and has been doing it for a few years now. Upward movement is slow especially since the economy still isn’t doing too well. However, he has exposure to many asset management firms and said that a few firms asked him if he might be interested in an analyst position. You basically will be helping PM’s, analysts, bankers etc… on how to use factset so you will get the chance to speak and meet with them on a regular basis. My roommate didn’t accept any of the offers b/c he doesn’t want to be an analyst.
I’d say go for it as you get a good FO role in finance. If you haven’t already done so, start studying for the CFA and a get 1 or 2 levels and a couple years experience under your belt and opportunities should open up.

I think they hire a lot for consulting positions within from lower ranks. They also seem to value the CFA big time, and will pay costs.
 
What lower ranks from within? Consultant is the entry level position at FDS.
 
My bad..I meant they recruit for sales from lower ranks within. Consultant is a good job if you are looking to get into sales/marketing.
 
I like using FactSet and I think selling it or teaching classes in it is probably pretty easy going for a sales job. Product is definitely decent, although I hear pricing can be a little high.
 
Pricing is REALLY high. The bill starts at something like 200k
 
on my factset interview after realizing what it was when they took us out to lunch i started drinking…two bombay sapphire rocks with lime and never got a call back…whatever!
 
You need to be smoking hot to work as an consultant for Factset. The two chicks who covers our firm’s Factset relationship are both model material. Anytime they call wanted to schedule lunch…we are like “heck yeah”. However, not to take anything away from them, they know their product pretty well. You also have to you the client firm’s need to customize the Factset.
 
Not totally true. My FactSet rep team is a sausage fest of 4 dudes.

I am sorry to hear that…I guess I suffered from sampling bias.
 
We were always annoyed when the dudes came in and tried to sell us more stuff, which would add 60k to the bill (at a min.)
If it was 2 beautiful girls doing it, I’m sure we wouldn’t mind them coming in and pitching. Though, I really doubt that would have convinced us to buy, it would have been a good show and smiles all around.

Whether or not $200k is expensive depends entirely on the number of seats you get. What is actually quite expensive is index data, especially given the scalability and relatively minisicule amount of work required to keep it up and running.
