My roommate has this job and has been doing it for a few years now. Upward movement is slow especially since the economy still isn’t doing too well. However, he has exposure to many asset management firms and said that a few firms asked him if he might be interested in an analyst position. You basically will be helping PM’s, analysts, bankers etc… on how to use factset so you will get the chance to speak and meet with them on a regular basis. My roommate didn’t accept any of the offers b/c he doesn’t want to be an analyst.
I’d say go for it as you get a good FO role in finance. If you haven’t already done so, start studying for the CFA and a get 1 or 2 levels and a couple years experience under your belt and opportunities should open up.
