Hey everyone, this is my first post so bear with me.
I am in the process of switching careers and am currently studying for the June CFA level 1 (I am getting started early). I have a few friends that work in fixed income trading. They said that the ability to contruct financial models on excel is pretty much a necessity. I have experience using statistcal programs like SPSS, SAS and STATA, but not much with excel.
Does anyone have any recommendations for books or stand-alone classes that teach financial modeling? I’ve found a ton of books on the topic but I don’t know which ones are any good. The only professional training I’ve found is through Euromoney, which is not an option since they don’t offer seminars in my area.
Thanks for any advice!
Also, if this is off-topic, does anyone know of other board(s) on the internet that may be helpful?

Not too sure what others would say, but I recently purchased Breaking Into Wall Street online videos about financial modeling. I got to say that they are pretty good at teaching the basics and gives you a decent background to fall back on in interviews if you get asked some questions.
BIWS is made from the same guys from Mergers and Inquisitions Another option would be WallStreetPrep but it is a little more expensive
Wallstreetoasis would be another forum that may have more information regarding financial modeling prep providers. Their forum has a shit layout but that’s another topic…

This is awesome. We can even learn models on inquisitions.

I learned most of what I know about Excel by working with it. You should learn a lot by actually doing it.
That being said, if you’re looking for something to help you with the CFA exam, don’t even bother with financial modeling, or excel, or anything. Just use your pencil, paper, and calculator. The curriculum will teach you what you need to know.

Yeah, I never used excel once until I did a summer student term, so completely self taught. Google and mrexcel.com are your friends.

I would recommend this if you are unfamiliar with Excel:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Excel-2010-Formulas-Spreadsheets-Bookshelf/dp/04...
It’s like excel for dummies but with stuff on macros and VBA as well. It also covers some basic things on constructing financial models in Excel.

Depending on what type of models you are wanting to learn, this is a great book I purchased on creating equity valuation models:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Equity-Valuation-Analysts-Investors-Kelleher/dp/...
This teaches you more or less how to construct equity valuation models from scratch, so if you are a complete beginner to valuation models but have some financial knowledge (have covered CFA L1) then this should be great.
