Firing employees to avoid paying bonus

Just to mention - whether or not an employer may fire an employee “at will”, depends on the legislation of the country/region you are working in.
With regards to an employee, it’s usually right, you may put a notice at will (in most of the cases). But for employer and his rights to fire people “at will”, laws vary greatly accross the globe.

… ergo the unemployment issues in France. I think standard notice can run up to 3 months and there must be documented “reason” otherwise the employer can easily be taken to court. No wonder they are so reluctant to hire.
 
I want to tell you one of my stories. I once tried to sue my employer (my boss was being an unfair prick) and tried to hire a lawyer. I got on the phone with one and he said “Your boss can be an asshole and can fire you, but unless it falls under race, age, religion or gender discrimination, you don’t have a case”
 
How would one prove that they were actually discriminated against? To me that seems exceptionally difficult to prove because, as noted above, employers can always find some reason to fire you.
 
A recently circulated internal memo at our company floated - The language was quite clear in intent and purpose - the idea that there might be layoffs owing to the tough market conditions. There you have it. Plain & simple.

The manager always has so called good reasons to fire somebody (even if it’s merely a dislike for the person) and there are always ways to match those good reasons with the ones allowed by law.
Wilier has a point. That’s how it works all over the world.
 
This is somewhat unrelated, but I quit my job this year 6 weeks before bonus time to accept another position. It would have been tough though had I been fired.
