i just received a gift worth about $200 from the broker that we use to do trades for our mutual funds.

my boss knows, is there anything else that i'm supposed to do?

Ritual ceramony of funding the gift with a Aussie escort lady - so i'm told.

I think you're supposed to get permission from your supervisor prior to accepting and receiving that gift.

Some people would strongly suggest you just keep your mouth shut and plead ignorance if anyone ever finds out.

Of course, I would suggest following the CFAI rules at all times tho.

deadcat, can you think of anything else i'm supposed to do?

we have a book where all gifts over a certain amount (approx $100) are logged.

WHAT I WOULD DO: just take it and keep my mouth shut.

WHAT YOU PROB SHOULD DO: if i was going to be a good boy I would pop a quick email telling the compliance dept, and keep a copy of the email for my records. That covers every base.

WHAT CFAI SAYS YOU SHOULD DO: under CFAI rules i dont think you're allowed to accept it as its from a broker and therefore creates a conflict of interest.

DC - aren't you allowed to accept it with full disclosure since it the broker is already an EXISTING client. I thought the only time you couldn't accept things is when there is a party that could be seen as trying to influence you into hiring/gaining their services?

Somebody, elaborate, cuz this is gonna f*ck me up in June.

For gifts less than $100: you can accept the gift without asking for permission because it is considered to be a modest gift.

For gifts greater than $100: you can accept the gift only after receiving permission from your supervisor

Disclosure is very important here. As long as disclosure takes place and permission granted, then you're alright. Not being able to accept a $200 at all seems too severe.

ok, i thought all i had to do is tell my supervisor (considering that he got the same gift, he knows).

good enough, i'll enjoy my cruise.

Are you sure the value is $200?

This may not apply but when I worked for a large I-bank there was an unwritten policy that anything with a corporate name on it was worth about a third of retail.

Quite useful if you were given nice corporate Mont Blanc stuff ...

Though personally I keep hardly anything with advertising on it.

Is the only time you have to tell your employer in writing when you start your own gig?
