GIPS - Verification

Hi guys,
i never get it with this verification stuff under GIPS. I get confused between the verification at the firm level and what can be done at a composite level for a given period. What is there to know? Does firm verification specify a time period? Can only one composite be verified?

Verification takes place at the firm level and the verification must include the period of compliance covered. This is not verification of a specific composite.
The firm may choose to verify a specific composite, but only after or concurrent with a firm-level exam. In other words, the firm cannot have a specific composite verified without first being verified as a firm.
