That's fair. In 10-15 years when I have alot of experience I may feel the same way, but right now I'd be fooling myself to say I can consistently, or even 80% of the time even, beat the market on a consitent basis. Actually reading a really good book on index funds and ETF's:
http://www.amazon.com/All-About-Index-Funds/dp/0071484922/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/105-2571892-3939606?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1182970686&sr=8-2
Much of it I already knew, but I'm learning some. The author is a charterholder
I'm also reading another book concureently by a Canadian asset manager who writes a Saturday column for ROB (one of Canada's two biggest business pubs) which is an opposite strategy of looking for just a few undervalued companies at a time through "sleuthing"
http://www.amazon.com/Sleuth-Investor-Avner-Mandelman/dp/0071481850/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/105-2571892-3939606?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1182970822&sr=1-2
So I guess I am somewhat balanced...
