Because it's stupid to pay two fees -- The FoF's and the funds the FoF invests in.

What if I've got, say, $6MM in investable assets and a $7MM net worth? This isn't enough to build a portfolio of hedge funds, but this investor would likely benefit from a 10-15% allocation to alternatives?

It is patently ridiculous that FoF take 1/10 or so. I know all the arguments about "providing" access" and whatnot, but even that ain't worth more than 150 bps PA, flat rate.

Anyone interested in starting a merger arb fund? I'm thinking of starting a hedge fund doing the strategy and combining with another market-neutral strategy I'm involved with now. Lawyer background, been at hedge fund a year and a half, two promotions in that time based on business acumen, CFA LI pass last Dec, CFA LII (hopefully) pass last June, co-head of a $150M piece of the book. If anyone is interested or knows anyone interested on the merger arb side, let me know.
