I think it's always useful to be able to think cynically, but not to let cynicism dominate your life. To be unaware of what the cynic thinks and what he/she is likely to do is just not being realistic (and arguably not being responsible). To feel obliged to be cynical because there's no other choice in life, that's another thing.

(I'm not accusing Lady Bambi of actually being cynical - she doesn't sound that way to me - it's just my reaction to her comment)

PPatel - can you clarify what type of PM you want to be? As others have discussed, the term "PM" is thrown around so haphazardly its hard to tell these days what people mean by the expression.

I would like to manage mutual funds but would be a bonus if i can managed hedge funds or fund of funds- using event driven / tactical stratigies.

but let see where i end up in 5 years time!!!

sounds like you have some interesting professional goals but do you know what any of them really are?

If you're going to be a credit analyst and want to be a fixed income PM I'd say you should focus on institutional versus retail. Just my opinion though.

Yes I have a good foundation of what they entail, I will not say I am 100% proficient as theory and practically applying my skills is indifferent. But I have good understanding of the difference between mutual and hedge funds and they different strategies involved between active and passive fund manager.

So you still think of gaining some sell side credit research skills will drive me to my goal in terms of picking up the right skills?

Nietzsche

Nietzsche published it first, but Kafka borrowed from Nietzsche.
