How could I start my career?

I actually got the Job. Starting next week.
At first I didn't think I would get it, So I already signed up for the CSC as it seemed to be a requirement for most entry level positions. I'm pretty sure it will be the last of the CSI experience for me. Just gonna focus on working and chilling out for the next few months, then start preparing for level 2 next june.

now, i would focus on the job and CFA for the next year and then re-assess the situation at that time. if its a firm that does more than just fund accounting, then i would start learning about other sides of the business (you never know what you'll end up doing 2, 3, 4, 5 years from now, so you might as well know as much as possible about different elements.

this is in TO, correct? are you with a fund company?
 
Yes its in TO. Its a investment Mgt company. And they do more than Fund accounting, so I hope to learn about the other sides of the business as you said in the future.
 
i did fund accounting several years ago, after 1 year, i knew as much as i wanted to know about the job and so i went on to another job within my old firm. it was a good training ground though, left many hours to study the CFA.
 
As to job hopping - the best route is to get promoted/moved around within one firm rather than hop from firm to firm to frim. This shows advancement instead of lack of commitment.

You guys talking about showing up and talking to HR folks - you've got the right attitude but the wrong approach - HR folks don't freaking care. They are looking for a set of criteria, and your approach won't matter if they don't think you meet them.

You need to get in front of whomever you want to work for - an MD, director, whoever. If they like you they'll get you through HR. Also, it's easier for everyone if you can get in front of a Sr. Manager in a related function or firm, looking for advice, vs. showing up and begging for a job (although this isn't a bad idea, either). If you show up with good credentials and looking for advice, everyone (including you) will be more comfortable. If he/she likes you, then you'll get references that will get you in front of the right people.

I applaud those of you who want to try the frontal assult approach. Just don't try it with HR. Skip HR and go straight to management.
 
i agree, HR can't make any decisions so useless to approach. approach the people who tell HR what paper work to fill out to have you on board asap.
