How do you ask for promotion?

just want some advise on how this can be done?

or alternatively, getting more pay. They fall under the same bucket.

I found it hard to start the topic, actually, I have no idea how to bring up the topic and convince your manager that you worth more money.

I assume this will be similar across the fields so please allow me to skip some formality on my role.

Any input will be appreciated.

Have a sitdown and discuss where you and your boss see you headed in the long and short term. If you have your game tight (which you should, starting topics like that) you will be able to outline why you need a promotion/pay raise. "I have mastered x, y, z am on the road to becoming competent in a and b, and by the end of next year will be ready to ... blah"

I would use Saks outline, but have an idea of the amount you are asking for...

"I have this job offer over here for X, but you're a great boss, and I like working with your team. What can we do to keep working productively together without any interruptions? This new position has X, Y, Z, and I think I could really do a good job of that."

Of course, you really do need to have that other job offer. And if they say, fine go there... you have to go.

I would refer to an external position in last resort, only if you're in a deadlock or if you're really ready to quit.

First I would do as Saks mentions, demonstrate what my achievements have been over the last year (ideally in regard with your objectives) and then I'd explain what I can do next year and how much this additional job / responsibilities are worth.
