Having passed I and II with a mix of Schweser for I and Schweser and Elan for I and II, my gf explained in her limited research that the CFAI materials were the best way to go, as there isn’t that much info in Level 3. Is this not the case? I’m finding there to be a lot of fluff and I’m at the 4th book and kind of fading. Is Schweser the best bet then? What are everyone’s thoughts on Elan? I loved their mocks for I and II.
Sorry for the redundant post no doubt– I tried sifting through 9-10 pages of threads but could only find threads for individual topics or questions, not overall study strategy.
Thanks in advance.

your gf’s a liar. I mean technically CFAI materials is always the best way to go, its provided by the people making the test.
However considering time…. Schweser is the way to go and the way im doing it.

I recommend using Schweser for reading and CFAI materials for BB/EOC questions.
If you are struggling answering the BB/EOC questions then read the CFAI chapter.
If you are still having difficulty, then try changing your gf.
But seriously, in my opinion, just wading through the CFAI material is a waste of time.

I was just joking.. don’t do it..
Jokes apart, I think schweser will do the job for you. There’s not much time left now.

Obviously you can’t go wrong with the CFAI texts, but there’s a lot of fluff in the books that you won’t need on exam day. If the material is interesting and you’re a leisure learner then go CFAI. If you are pressed for time and just want to pass the exam go with Schweser.
Candidates that fail using a third party resource are quick to blame them for their shortcomings. Most of the people I’ve talked to that failed using Schweser/Elan/etc… did so because they half @ssed their studying. Schweser is a short cut to some degree, but you still have to put forth the same effort that you would have with the CFAI material.

I went for the CFAI material.
I needed a bit more fluff at the beginning to get into the curriculum because level III is way more qualitative than the other levels so I needed to be “told a story”. I had no interest in the curriculum at start and it helped me.
Since I need to mentally visualize the books I am using I could not go for several different ones. So, since I had started with it, I sticked to the CFAI material.
But at some point I realized it was too much (I couldn’t not retain anything, nor visualize… just too many pages, too much stuff…) so I changed my method slightly. But not until I actually failed level iii last year actually. So now I took some notes of volumes 2, 3 and 4. And I force myself to do some practice problems, which I did not do last year as my time was eaten up by the volume of the material….
I heard about many people going for the CFAI material for level 3, although they had used Schweser for 1 and 2. You just need to find the method that suits you best I guess.
good luck!

Go with Schweser and finish the curric faster.. CFAI text probabably a better read if you’re actually leisure reading.
No one here is doing that, however.

I read through every single page of CFAI and every page of Schweser
CFAI was definitely better and worth the time.
But what do I know…
