Hi,
I just got approved by the local society and paid all my dues both to CFAI and the local society. When can I use the CFA designation?
 
Thanks. I opened this thread because the 20 threads didn’t seem to exactly answer my question. Everybody seems to say different things about when we can start using the charter.
Some say we need to receive an official email stating that we can use the charter, other say that as long as we become regular members we’re good to go.
Does anybody know a definitive answer on when we can start using it?

There are a number of threads with the definitive answer. You have to wait until the CFAI informs you of when you can use the charter. Someone posted an alleged email from CFAI which said charters will be awarded on Sept 4th which makes sense because on the CFAI website it says my co-worker was awarded her charter on Sept 5th 2012.
People also suggest that when you long on to the CFAI website and you see your name with CFA after it then it means it’s official. All of these suggestions are stating the same thing in different ways.
BOTTOM LINE: You are not a charterholder until either CFAI tells you or changes your status on their website.
 
so you are saying I can use the charter now that I am a regular member?
 
^No. You need to wait official email that you can start using it or if you see your name, CFA printed under my account on CFAI website.

Why dont you Call CFAI and ask “Can I use the CFA letters now?” Is this so difficult?
And also, if 20 threads say “conflicting things”, what do you hope to learn by starting the 21st thread asking the same thing?

i found it amusing that people get so upset about someone starting a new thread.
it is the internet though.
 
Just spoke with Jennifer at Customer Service, who was lovely might I add, at the CFAI. Emails are going out the 1st week of Sept but you do not have to wait until then… YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL THE LETTERS “CFA” ARE NEXT TO YOUR NAME ON THE CFAI WEBSITE…
 
There is a ceremony in which you are bestowed the charter. Trumpets blare, minstrels sing songs, and angels dance in the heavens.
Has any of that happened? Then no.

not a bad strategy.
what happens if someone decides to change their name legally.
John Doe decides to add a middle name (Doe) and change his last name to CFA
Hence: John Doe CFA
 
A colleague who isn’t affiliated with the CFA institute in any way said to me earlier that he might just start using the letters.
why didn’t I think of that?
 
Well it’s not really hard to prove he’s not a charterholder. Just look up his name on the website and if it’s not there then you know he’s a fraud. Any employer worth their salt will find out in less than 5 minutes.
 
September 4th is the supposed date stated by CFAI that eligible members will see “CFA” after their name on the website. From then on you can use it.

After asking the same question to the CFAI, their answer is clear: whatever the date, you can put that ,CFA after your name as soon as you see your name appear that way when you log in to the CFAI website.
As for the date, let me quote CFAI’s answer by mail to my question: “Because of internal processes associated with the release of June 2013 Level III exam results and the resulting graduation process, the charter award process was temporarily suspended on 2 August. This process will resume on 4 September for the new charter year of September 2013 through early August 2014.”
 
I just spoke to CFAI and they said the next person to email or call them with this question will have all prior exam results voided.
Guess, we should just wait.
