How many of you all are going to take this exam.. taking Ritalin or Adderall?

Just trying to get a hint, so I know the cheaters I am competing against.

You can just bite me. Ritalin and Adderall are important drugs to treat a real medical condition (ADHD). To suggest that someone taking one of these drugs is cheating is offensive and awful.

Joey:

I have family members on the stuff, and I agree it's an important and useful treatment for ADHD. I think it's overprescribed (disclaimer: I'm not a medical person, so my opinion is no more valid than any yahoo's'), but that's a conversation for another day.

But hellomello may have a valid point (badly stated, but it may have some validity). About a year or so back, I came across some articles that claimed that there's a lot of misuse of these two drugs on college campuses (particularly in law school). Supposedly, students take these at exam times to help them focus (both in studying and on the exams).

So, I started informally polling my students (at the coffee shop next to my office) from time to time. They almost always say that they know of multiple cases of students without any diagnosed medical conditions who take Adderall or Ritalin during exam time to give them an edge. In fact, anyone with pills on hand at can make some coin during these times - there's a pretty good black market for the stuff.

I was astounded at the extent of the usage. Of course, it was in no way a scientific study - only an informal poll. So, they could have overreported, told me what I wnated to hear, made s**t up, etc...). But it was pretty consistent over about a dozen students I polled.

I know people that have taken it for studying and passing the CFA exams, but I view it as cheating and do not. It in fact pisses me off quite a bit. BS.

I on the other hand stick to many redbulls, coffee, soda, espressos and other socially acceptable and legal methods.

What if someone asked you that in an interview. If you used adderall to pass the CFA exams in studying or the actual exam.

Thats a good point, hellomello - one I might actually use in the future if I ever interview charterholders in the workforce. . . BS

I Googled this after reading busprof's post. Holy cow...I had no idea that people were abusing these drugs this much. Becoming a speed addict to help pass a CFA exam is really dumb. Really, really dumb.

It's one thing to chemically alter yourself for fun.

But to do it to pass an exam is just wrong.

but one can argue just because you are taking this drug isnt going to make you pass the exam... its that your concentration and mindset is on one thing. the exam.

versus the rest of population that can be distracted by who knows what..

i do personally know many ibanker acquaintances that abuse these drugs... just to concentrate at work... and do speed in the bathroom to function.. what do you all think about that?

many at goldman sachs.

Why does one need to take drugs? The CFA and investing in general is too interesting for drugs. I could look at spreadsheets for days straight ;)

brokers are NOTORIOUS for doing cocaine. Its not a secret. Welcome to the real world.

My gf was away for all of the three weeks before my L2 exam, I was horny after every three pages of reading and was distracted when even looking at the Schweser girl (another reason to pass L1, you will get a girl on the cover next year).

Now you tell me there were drugs that could have calmed me down and helped me focus??? Sh*t!

That wouldn't be Ritalin, but lots of anti-depressants drop your sex drive a ton. Just about any SSRI would take that away (prozac, paxil, lexapro...). I wonder if hellomello would think that you were cheating because you were taking prozac to stop intrusive thoughts about the Schweser girl.
