Why don't you learn? Sounds like you have a great tutor available. Pick up the 'Japanese for Busy People' books and tapes (get the hiragana/kanji ones). It will give you a very interesting perspecive on languages.

I took several years of Japanese lessons from the Tenrikyo church using those books. Fun..

This is funny! What would it be now, Spanish for the optimists and Chinese for the pessimists? I admit I am going by the girls here, I prefer Latino samba to Eastern confucianism but I'm sure other people's tastes will differ.
 
Nope. Turkish is my mother tongue.
