Just wondering if anyone can provide some comments on the current job market in Toronto….and the quality of job postings on the Toronto CFA society site.
You need to be a member in order to view the job postings (for Toronto), but Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver can all be viewed without having to be a member.

From talks here and there, Toronto seems to have much better prospects than NYC

I’ve had a few interviews in Toronto… after throwing out over 250 resumes and cover letters.
Two of the four interviews were with real estate firms.
Same response from everyone “Your resume looks good but we’re just not hiring, we’ll keep it on file for 6 months.” I even had a HF manager go out of the way to forward it along to a couple of his acquaintances at different firms.

250 resumes? wow…if that’s the real count, you are persistent!!
I sent out about 15-20 when I got here, and got 4 interviews (2 became offers)…so yeah, I started working within 6 weeks after moving and starting from scratch this past summer
come to Toronto…if you have a good resume that is
I moved here before I started applying…I heard, and agree with from my experiences, that you will hear back from companies alot easier if you are in the GTA already
p.s. get in touch with Recruiting companies downtown here…if they like your resume and you do well in the interviews with them, they get you interviews with great companies

BuySide, what Recruiting companies did you work with and how experienced are you?

dont know about the postings on toronto cfa society website…but job market in toronto is looking very dull at the moment. but that is not to say you cant get lucky and find a decent job.

whats your background reggie?

I didn’t work for any recruiting companies, I just used them to land a few interviews. Once I got my job, they said Good luck and that’s the end of them.
I’ve got my Masters (not mba) and less than two years of experience in the financial services area…I took a very entry level job at a firm off Bay street…figure getting my foot in the door is a good start while trying to pass level 3
I will look into the recruiting companies for you sometime soon - I can’t remember the names.
the company that got my job is TDS Personel…they are located right at the corner of Bay st and Queen…..check it out

@bodhisattiva - I’m a recent grad, econ & finance w/ Level I and some decent extracurriculars. It is a good enough resume to land me two interviews with an investment bank but there’s a million recent grad’s out there - it’s so difficult to even find interviews.
@BuySide - Thank you very much, I’ll look into those.

Hey guys,
The Toronto CFA website has some good postings that I don’t seem to see on any other job sites. I have only been on it since early September, but it seemed to be going at a pretty steady pace, they would have 1 or 2 postings per day (1 of which I got an interview out of), until about a week or 2 ago. At that time there was a huge lull in activity, and pretty much nothing was posted during the period. This week so far, seems like they’re back on track, but the jobs posted are definitely not entry level.
I would say it is a good source of opportunities, and in many cases the job postings provide you with a direct contact at the company, which can be beneficial.
Anyways, I am finding the overall job market in Toronto to be quite stagnant at the moment. Perhaps I will look into some of those recruiting services.
