Hey everyone,

I just wrote the Level 1 exam this past June and am also patiently awaiting my results as I'm sure everyone else is as well. I just graduated college about a year ago and am coming up on the year mark at my current employer. I thought with this free time I would fix up my resume and start applying for jobs that would complement as much of the CFA Curriculum as possible. I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to what type of positions/companies I should be looking into (i.e. Equity Research, Hedge Funds, Mutual Funds, etc), keeping in mind my 1 year of experience. I currently do back-office cash rec's and client reporting, so not really much exposure to the topics covered in the exams. Again, I'd appreciate any advice/help as to what I should consider, where to look, anything really. I'm in the NY area so I'm sure there's a lot around, I just need to know where to look. Thanks in advance!

Look at smaller firms where you might get more varied tasks.... and become more involved in overall management.... where I'm at now (large firm) work is deeply "compartmentalized" and my impression is that it might be difficult to move between departments or divisions....

Amtrak, have you considered doing informational interviews, joining local societies or job shadowing for example?

I don't think anyone can help you figure out what YOU want to do. Ultimately, it's a matter of knowing what's out there and getting your feet yet. That's the only way to find out if you enjoy doing something or not.

good luck!

Lola...I actually havn't looked into info. interviews, societes or job shadowing, however will start to, thanks! You are definitely right as to me having to figure out what I want to do in the end. I was just wondering if anyone knew of anything someone with my 1 year experience would have a realistic chance of obtaining that would give me the best exposure. But, like you said, the best thing would be to go out there and go through the motions and seeing what is out there.

Again, thanks for all the advice!

you might want to look into a support role (finance or ops. support) within an invesmtment management group at a bank. With your experience, you'd have a good chance of getting that sort of a job and then moving up from there and yes you have tons of opportunities like that in NYC. I know UBS, Citi and BofA have huge finance support groups concentrating on hedge funds, private equity, private client, trading etc.
