Hi Guys,

Has anyone ever heard about this program because it is a very intriguing degree.... MBA and three levels of CFA.

As it is a three and a half year program it is obviously very expensive and time consuming, do you think such a program is a good idea.

Does anyone know if the likelyhood of passing the three levels of CFA increase and by what amount.

Lastly I would appreciate any feedback on this program as im considering applying some time in the near future.

Thanks guys

You could almost get a PhD in the same time as the Laurier program. I'd rather the PhD hands down. Plus, I think it is about a $50k program which is expensive for a Canadian degree.

I believe UBC and possibly Concordia have similar programs but not as long. Unless you already have the work experience, you will still be another four years after the program before you actually receive the charter. I would assume that the pass rates would be higher for people in the program than the average candidate.

Just saw the title. Didn't realize it was part-time

I think this is pretty funny, actually.

So you take these courses that prepare you for CFA level I and then you fail it (a 2/3 possibility). You are then in a pretty precarious spot within this program. What do you do? Withdraw from the program until you pass CFA I? Do you take CFA level II classes while you still haven't passed CFA I? In the end, I'll bet you get neither the CFA Charter or the MBA.

If you're smart enough to think this is not a significant possibility, then you don't need Laurier part-time. I've never heard of the MBA program so if it showed up on a resume on my desk, I would just think another dime-a-dozen MBA.

This looks like a really expensive CFA review class. Contact your local society and ask about the review classes in your area.

Acutally if it happens that you dont pass your CFA exams you continue with the MBA program and you will ultimately finish with the degree (even if you dont pass any CFA levels).

Also, laurier is better known in Canada for its undergrad Bcomm program although I wasent to sure if their MBA program is as well recognized.

So you don't pass CFA level I and then you continue taking classes aimed at passing CFA level II so that you can get an MBA degree.... Does that make any sense?

I don't know what Bcomm means. I don't mean any disrespect for Laurier's reputation and certainly not its faculty or its students. I am sure they teach all kinds of wonderous things there. This program is just a bad idea. In fact, it's one of those ideas that is completely obvious and nobody is doing it. The reason nobody is doing it is because it's a bad idea.

Never stopped you voicing a heavy-handed opinion yet...

Joey,

B. Comm. or Bachelor of Commerce, is a common/popular degree in countries with education systems having roots in the British education system. Courses include accounting, general business management and organization, micro/macro economics, business law, business statistics, and some other business-related courses. I guess the U.S. equivalent would be BBA, but I suspect B. Comm is probably bit more rigorous.

I personally enjoy when JoeyDVivre states his opinion. I put much more weight on what he has to say compared to many other posters.

Good call Danny Boy. I was actually just reading a stats book and wondered to myself, what would JoeyDVivre think of that. I think I may have an AF addiction.

Joey, Laurier does have a good reputation in Canada. It's a solid second-tier university. (Laurier grads, don't bother correcting me, it's not elite.)

I wish I could convince my kids to go to Canadian universities. I think that McGill, McMaster, Toronto, Waterloo, etc. are some of the greatest bargains on earth. This program at Laurier does not seem to be one of the greatest bargains. I could buy a serious kick-ass wine collection with the money I save.
