How much work did you avoid writing this lengthy post and participating in this thread that is approaching 3 hours in duration?

Those that live in glass houses...

Oh please, no one works 100% of the time. Mental breaks, such as reading/posting on AF, can actually help increase productivity.

I think the difference is that his typing on AF is not disturbing his colleagues and he is not complaining about how much work his supervisors give him and that it is impossible to get it all done.

I am probably not the only one that finds numi's posts beneficial.

I sure hope he keeps taking mental breaks.

Numi,

As to your question, I understand. What I have learned is that the world isn't as efficient/fair as we would like it to be. Often, these will be the same folks that giggle with every secratary that passes by in the hallway for 10min at a time. It will drive you nuts. And, it will be justified with a "I am more of a people person."

As to hard work going rewarded. I don't know if this is necessarily the case. These folks are likely to get the same bump as you at the end of the year. That is because the market tends to reward those that are willing to change up every 2 to 3 years. (see grunt's posts, she summed this up quite well...but unfortunately many of us still need to learn this the hard way). I am sure that hard work will eliminate any downside (hard to sink a guy that cranks work). I just am not so sure about the upside (unless it is in the form of a counter-offer).

As to my solution, I have resorted to wadding up piece of paper and simply dropping paper-bombs...followed up by a "why don't you get to work you slackers"

I'm having a different problem right now... My group's admin suddenly will barely speak to me. She's the only other woman in my group, and we've always been friendly. She sits in the next cube over and now won't even turn around when I enter her cube. I asked if everything was alright and she just said she didn't have anything to say. Women! We've never had the slightest disagreement, and I never said anything about her to anyone else. At a loss...

As my husband recommended... "Yeah, why don't you spend the rest of your day trying to figure out how you could've pissed an admin off."

Numi, thanks you - I got your email and then was interrupted by wallpaper removal chaos (lots of home improvement stuff going on). Will reply this weekend...

People were just loud outside my office while I need to get some work done. So I got up and closed my office door.

gamblingeconomist, that is difficult to do when you're sitting in a cube. (Hopefully for less than 6 more months!)

People use to grumble all the time at the mutual fund company I worked for. What was more annoying is that they wouldn't do anything about it. Update your resume? Apply for any jobs lately? How's your network? Your job isn't going to fix itself.

Why is it necessary to get along with everybody? I enjoy a good confrontation as long as it conveys the right message. I'm certainly not trying to promote disruptive behaviour, I'm simply trying to make you understand that sometimes it's better to confront your problems. More often then not, people respect this.

Numi, I don't know you, and you seem like a nice enough person, but don't be a push-over.

Cheers.

Hi all -- thanks for all the feedback. I didn't expect this discussion to go so long after having stepped away foro the day, but I hope I didn't convey the wrong message. Yes, it was a bit of a rant, as things have been particularly hectic for me and my team lately, but it's not like I'm going to flip out or anything. In any case, it looks like there was some constructive commentary and discussion here, and I think people can appreciate your contributions.

Anyway, it's certainly not the first time I've encountered this situation at work and I know it won't be the last. But I'll live with it and I'll keep your comments in mind. Don't worry though -- I'm not about to leave my job to open a sideshow selling peanuts or anything. Things will be fine.

Have a good weekend all.

numi,

I can relate to your situation. You might find this thread relevant:
