Hi all,

I'm a UK medical doctor and have been working in hospital medicine for 4 years. I am planning to pursue an MBA in the UK starting 2007.

Post-MBA I am interested in the following areas ER, VC, PE or management consultancy. I plan to apply to LBS, Oxford and possibly INSEAD. Is this a good choice? Do you think I need to apply to more schools, so that I am accepted somewhere?

I am wondering if anyone has insight into how these schools view applications from doctors wanting to do an MBA. In general terms how good a chance do I have of being accepted at them? Does anyone know doctors at MBA programmes?

Also any suggestions on how I can strengthen my MBA application will be greatly appreciated. I don't have any great extracurriculum activites, and am unsure how I can differentiate myself from other doctors applying.

I'm currently revising for the GMAT and am aiming for 680+. If I end up with 640+, will this be acceptable?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

I recently recieved my MBA from a school in the U.S., Cleveland State University.

Although I cannot comment on:

I can comment on medical doctors earning their MBA. In my program there were several doctors from notable institutions and I found that they were a great asset to the classes. Their unique insight greatly enhanced many of our discussions, and overall it seems that earning an MBA was an excellent career move for them...mostly in hospital administration

As for a GMAT score of 640-680 I think with an MD these scores would be favorable in the U.S. to many top schools. I know that some schools in the U.S. don't even require MD's to take the GMAT...although I'm sure most of the "top programs" probably do.

In any case, good luck and I firmly beleive that adding an MBA to your list of credentials would be a good move no matter what your future plans are.

MP95 thanks for your insight.

Anyone else have any advice, please.

I actually disagree with MP95 when it comes to the GMAT scores considered decent at the schools you are considering.

Here are the averages I could find:
INSEAD: 702
Oxford: 680
LBS: 690

MP95, a range of 640 - 680 is below average for the top 20 schools in the U.S., and particularly for the top 10. I wouldn't assume that, just because the poster has an MD, he can necessarily achieve less than the average score and expect to be admitted.

As for the MD, if you're able to show how you want to build upon your medical experience by getting an MBA, then your MD may be a benefit to your app. But if you don't spin it well in your essays, you could come across as just aimless. I am assuming you're attempting to take a health care focus in VC or PE. Is this correct?

Dude...you are a DOCTOR...you help people...why in the world do you want to go into ER?

Doctor, if I could go back in time now, I would have studied science subjects, instead of arts, and studied to become a doctor! and become a baby doctor. You could perhaps read more about this industry, and people working in it, before you make your move, and then perhaps you would change your mind and stay your path. Many people would do anything to make money, but at the end of the day, without health, they cannot enjoy their wealth, and they would pay anything to see doctors to fix their health.
