OK, OK, I understand the concept of using logic to try and derive formulas as opposed to rote - but heck, there has to be some middle ground of using memory pegs. Any ideas / suggestions on how to balance the two - (a) Are Flash cards a good tactic to accomplish this? (b) Hypnotism (c) Astrology??????

Just put your books under the pillow when you go to sleep.

I always try to remember that a P/E ratio is Price/Earnings ratio just like the letters. Don't tell anyone my secret though.

Mrs. Stealth uses a lot of mnemonics for memorizing numbers and dates. However, I find her memory tricks to be more work than just memorizing the phone number or date in the first place.

I did find a couple tricks, though, when doing my CFP(r). For example, I used to work in tech, and my support engineers would need to support Beta systems (systems going through a final real-word trial as the final development phase). In finance, I always had difficulty remembering if Beta measured systemic or unsystemic risk. Then I realized all I had to remember was Beta systems. It worked for me only because the phrase was so ingrained in me from working in a systems environment.

So, see if there is anything like that in your work/school environment that can be easily used to help. Just coming up with connections without them having a connection elsewhere may not be helpful, as now you need to remember what you need to help you remember and then remember what the connection between the two are.
