Anyone have any experience interviewing at Mesirow or any insight on the culture/hours, etc?

At the moment, just Chicago...but I'm geographically mobile...

While I have not worked there, I've heard they are a pretty nice shop to work for. It also depends on the group...this company is a conglomorate (consulting, banking, asset management...)

any idea on hours? its for their restructuring/banking group...

I would imagine on average a 50-55hr week. As with any consulting gig, however, hrs can vary, and with bankruptcy season fast approaching I wouldn't been surprised to see hrs get pushed far north of this. The good news is that unlike banking, weekends are mostly free and comp isn't too bad.

BigRed, can I ask what your background is in? The reason I ask is that I'm considering a similar path and am currently in distressed business valuation.

From what I've heard, its much more than 50-55 hours a week, specifically around 80+ hours! The reason why I asked on the forum is to confirm if this was accurate or not.

I'm currently in the financial services business of a Dow 30 company focusing on leveraged transactions. Given everything that has been going on in the market, the pipeline has slowed down quite a bit. Not really complaining since I work about 50 hours a week, but just keeping my options open just in case.

Distressed business valuation is a great place to be in this market. Not sure if you would want to jump around much given that you will likely land some great experience over the next 12-18 months. Just a thought.

Hey BigRed,

Did you network your way into Mesirow or go through HR?

They have a MF research analyst position I'm interested in but I have no connections.

Thanks

The restructuring group works WAY more than 55+ hrs/week, 80 would be minimum, I think they have pretty high turnover as well (its a group mesirow bought from EY I believe).

Hey ChiTownBull,

I went through some alumni and they pulled me in for a quick phone interview.

Mh7 - yea, I've heard the hours are pretty crazy in the restructuring group. Didn't realize that the group was from EY or any other Big 4...

just to follow up...no one has had any phone screenings with HR? If you have had one, what should I expect? I'm assuming nothing technical...just background etc...

Mesirow HR are typical HR people (i.e. totally useless & have zero knowledge about anything that actually goes on inside the business units). Virtually all hires at mesirow are from referals, so the hr hiring function is very limited.

Do not expect any sort of meaningful/difficult questions from them on any subject. At most they will take some notes about prior employment & experience & pass it along to some manager (who will most likely never read the comments anyway).

I would be suprised if they are actually hiring anyone - most of the firm has a hiring freeze on right now (like pretty much every other finance company), although that groups function is pretty counter cyclical, so maybe they are different (they were shedding people & scaling back offices two years ago).

I was formerly with their banking group. A very nice shop with good people. Deal flow is concentrated on the packaging industry, with some other basic industrial/consumer transactions. Hours are not that bad. I'd say for associates, normal hours are 9 to 11 weekdays, and Sunday afternoons.

Thanks for the input. Just got word that they are holding off on interviewing/hiring until next year (surprise, surprise)...

Just fyi the banking & restructuring groups are totally independent at mesirow. The banking group is really small (and most of the analysts seem to be related to execs of either the firm or some of its major clients). The restructuring practice was purchased from KPMG (I was mistaken about it being from EY) & is the group that puts in the crazy hours.

Its not a terribly good company to work for so I wouldn't worry a whole lot about not interviewing there.
