I'm moving to Boston, any help? What is the job market like?
Average salary for analyst for money manager or asset management firm?

job market is tough there. many qualified people with strong resumes. Also very expensive. Wouldn't recommend moving there unless you already have job or a rock solid resume.

If you have some wiggle room and have not fully committed to Boston, try Baltimore instead. I live in Baltimore and intern at one of the largest firms in the area.

1. There are 5 or 6 really good firms within the Baltimore/DC metro area
* T. Rowe
* Legg
* Pro-Funds
* Rydex
* Friedman Billings Ramsey
* Ferris Baker Watts
* Brown Advisory

Seems like there are always jobs open too.

2. Your dollars will go a lot further.

3. Baltimore is a real up and comming city.
* Great night life.
* Many parts of the city are being developed or are already developed.
* Cost of living is much lower than Boston.

- The crime rates are overrated. As long as you stay where you belong, you'll never even notice the fact that we lead the country in homicides.

- Public transportation in b-more sucks, though.

Baltimore is filled with BOM jobs

*Nightlife is a bunch of meatheads seing who can be the bigger tough guy. Although there are quality ladies in Baltimore
*If you have wiggle room go to Chicago

Fidelity is still ramping up research here, but you should have sell side or top 5 MBA to get looked at - they are also doing a lot of poaching.

Average salary is going to depend most on experience - starting analyst for fixed income was 85 + bonus back in August. I think equity was a bit higher.

There are tons of BOM jobs if you are interested as well.

Fidelity, State Street, Putnam, Wellington, Columbia Asset Mgt (B of A), PanAgora, Acadian Asset Mgt, Standish Mellon, GMO, Pioneer Investments, Eaton Vance, MFS, etc., Geode and other hedge funds, it's a great buyside town, this Boston is.

I'd expect a decent senior analyst here (one of the above) makes around 150k base, annual bonus opp of around 150-175/yr, and another 80-100k/year in longer-term bonus payout.

How long were you based in Baltimore? If you dont mind me asking, why was your experience so negative?

also alot of smaller firms, check out monster.com or hotjobs, wil give you a pretty good idea. its a good town imo

nope its plano, texas. The plano handshake is said to be slapping the vein on the inside of your elbow to get it to perk up.

I never considered Baltimore. Love that touristy area by the aquarium. Plus, Edgar Allen Poe is buried right in Blatimore! The area around his grave is a little sketchy, but overall the city seems quite nice.

Not based there, I know a bunch of people who live/work there. From my experience they all work at big name banks, but they all work Back office, seems to be a trend in Baltimore. Everytime I go out in Baltimore at night there seems to be a brawl of some sort so its not my favorite scene

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
For those who moved there...was it hard to find a good position?
What channels did you go through?

Cost of living? Can I get a decent condo downtown Boston/Brookline area for $250K
1 bedroom/2 bath?

"Can I get a decent condo downtown Boston/Brookline area for $250K

Not even close. You might be able to find a really crappy studio for $250K; maybe. 1BR will start at $350-400K, and wouldn't be considered "decent" until $500-600K.

check out caigslist.org and boston.com for real estate questions. 2 baths are hard to find, even for a 2 bedroom.

I figured as much. bob5, thanks, yes I've been doing the research on craigslist.
I want to live close enough so I can utilize the "T" (Mass Transit in Boston).

I saw a few condos around 320K, but pictures can decieve....
Where I'm from 320K can get a nice 4 bedroom 2500 sq ft brick home, 2 car attached, in a great area....damn city living!
