I have an interview for a position for maintenance/technical support of Murex financial systems. I have no previous background in this or finance but I heard that a lot of companies use the system for derivatives, FX trading, etc.
Does anyone else work with it or has heard about it…I have a few questions
1) Is it worth it to leave a well-paying engineering job to this, for either less or about the same salary ?
2) Is there a future in doing this ? In either murex systems or IT (sql, unix) from the skills I would learn doing this
3) Do you think the knowledge gained would help in cominbation with a CFA to move to a finacial analyst role ?

I’d guess that if you frequent this forum it
1) might be worth it
and
2) might be
3) quite likely - if you’re in an engineering job now that is

Hi MehdiOchre,
thanks for the reply…but do you have any more insights and reasons behind the maybes…or maybe some anecdotes.

Some SQL/programming stuff might get you into some of the more technical/quantitative high-frequency type investment stuff, assuming you’re doing other things (CFA, maybe a Masters of something financial and difficult or something).

I am derivatives dealer in a bank using Murex as fo system. I know there were guys that moved from IT support position closer to front office, but I personally dont think that understanding Murex from administrator side would help you with carreer change (FA role). gl

^- agreed
You seldom see anyone making a career change from engineering to financial analyst.

Yeah I know…but its something I am interested in…
I think it will be even harder to go: engineering -> IT -> finance
