There is no reason to fail if you do the following:

-Start early (no less than 4 full months before the exam). This is a marathon, not a sprint.

-Review, review, review. For every new topic you learn, review a previous one.

-I used Schweser and didn't open up the CFAI text once. I got >70% on all topics. Schweser works.

-Do as many Schweser practice exams as possible. While they are not a great representation of the actual exam (in terms of both difficulty and material), they are an invaluable way to highlight your weaknesses and build up your test-taking stamina. Take these exams once you have gone through all of the material at least once. Ideally you should leave yourself 3+ weeks to focus on practice exams (and review). I didn't bother with Book 7 as the questions are unnecessarily difficult.

-Do ALL 5 CFAI practice exams. Worth every penny.

-Actively visit and participate in AF. This is an amazing resource to get your questions answered, work on random problems, and most importantly, stay motivated. The success rate of those regular AFers who took June 2007 was >90%. Enough said.

At times you will feel frusterated and that you will never pass. Just keep your head down, crank away, and you will pass. As others have said, this is more a test of disclipline and work ethic than a test of intelligence.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips and advice and congrats on scoring so high!!

Please can you tell me what is AF??? I was thinking of getting Stalla material, is Schweser better? I know you may not have any experience with Stalla yourself but have you heard if its equally good?

Would you know where I would be able to get access to the past question papers by any chance??

Thanks again :-)

I'll counter that....

My recipe for success:

CFAI texts
Qbank
Schweser Book 7 Practice Exam
Coffee and Aderall

Typical weekend for me during my regimen: Up at 7am. Studying in my office by 8m. Get home about 10pm.

I didnt do a single CFAI online exam. I figured they had already sucked enough money from me. Wasn't about to give them anymore.

My secret: mneumonics - i live and die by them
also...i created about 5 posters - huge posters - and hung them all over my room on the walls and the ceilings. I jotted down formulas and made grids for the effects on CFO, CFI, CFF, - lifo, fifo, lease vs. non-lease..etc - you get the point. Anyways...i swear that all that information leaked into my head when i was sleeping. Its the first thing I would see in the morning and the last thing I would see at night. It def helped.

Dipti,

I cannot comment on Stalla because I have never used it. When I first came here the general consensus of the board was to use Schweser so I went for it. It's not perfect, however it clearly gets the job done. Personally, I never even considered using the CFAI text- they are simply too boaring, unfocused, and long-winded. However if you have no finance/accounting background then they may be useful.

To get the past question papers I would search the old threads and ask the people who got them. Unfortunately I no longer have them. I didn't even use them however, as the questions appeared too basic and I chose to focus on the Schweser exams at that point.

Jbisback - you are the one, I believe. You speak like a soldier attacking CFA was your motive... nice

Jbisback - you are the one, I believe. You speak like a soldier. Attacking CFA was your sole motive... nice congrats again. Hope you are gearing up for LII when its time.

I like your advice Zombie, I will use it. Congrats.

I should be done with FSA this week (Friday night, or Saturday Morning). My goal is to have everything done once by Mid September or late August. So that I can review till the start of November where I will do nothing but practive exams.

JB, I stole your poster idea and it helped me pass. Making grids that showed the effect of capital vs. operating, LIFO vs. FIFO, etc.. made the difference in me passing. Also the John Harris Accounting workshop was incredible. Sign up for it early though. He knows his stuff. Also remember that you are not going to pass this thing if you dont put the time in. I only started studying on weekends about a month before the exam, but I was at work until about 9 pm for about 5 months. Stay motivated and keep your schedule consistent and you should pass.
